First off, let’s discuss the physical manifestation. Under eye bags and puffiness is caused by naturally occurring fat that resides beneath the eye. This fatty tissue is held in place by ligaments and as we age the ligaments become weaker and that fat gets pushed forward, closer to the surface of your skin. And that results in dark shadows forming beneath your eyes and a puffy appearance.
There are several factors that play into this. One is heredity. Genes, including our structural and anatomic makeups can contribute to the occurrence of puffiness and dark shadows underneath the eyes. And as we have mentioned, age also contributes to the process because the skin loosens and loses much of its natural elasticity as we get older.
