College Student Health Insurance – Why You Must Protect Yourself
A sometimes overlooked but very important aspect of higher education is college student health insurance. We never know what curves life is going to throw us. Although young people tend to think that because they are young and healthy at present that they are going to stay that way. Unfortunately, sickness and injury has an insidious way of sneaking up on us all.
There’s no question that higher education is extremely expensive and is getting seemingly more expensive by the day. It’s tough enough securing the finances to pay for tuition, books and room and board without having to add other expenses into the mix. But when looked at from a different perspective it really is something that we can’t afford not to have.
If something were to happen such as injury or serious illness that required extensive medical attention the ensuing bills could easily run into the tens of thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of dollars. For anyone that has recently required medical care they can attest to the fact that it is extremely costly.
For the vast majority of students it will be challenging enough to pay back their student loans when they leave school without having to add huge medical bills to their piles of debt. Being saddled with huge debt is a really lousy way to start your adult life and if it does happen to you can bet that the medical providers that the money is owed will not stop until they are paid in full.
Surveys show that approximately 30% of college students in America do not have any health insurance at all. That is about 4 million people without college student health insurance to protect them. And you can bet that a great many of these students will require extensive medical care in one form or another at great cost to them.
If a student does not qualify for coverage under their parent’s or guardian’s policies then they can check with the student services office of their college or university to see what types of alternatives are available. Many schools will provide income-based health insurance at a nominal rate that is usually deferred much the same way as a student loan is.
There are many options available that simply need to be explored. Check with your school and online to familiarize yourself with college student health insurance coverage options. You absolutely do not want to leave yourself exposed to devastating medical expenses. There is absolutely no need to take on that risk so by all means, protect yourself.
