Health Insurance For Students – We’ve Got You Covered

Health care has become so prohibitively expensive that we really can’t afford not to have insurance. Unfortunately, oftentimes health insurance for students is overlooked because generally young people are in excellent health and they don’t see the need for it. But as we all know, life has a tendency to through curves at us without warning and that unfortunately includes injury and sickness.

So what exactly is the best way to insure a college student? There are in fact several different options, all of which are viable forms of health insurance coverage for students. First off, it should be mentioned that we need to make sure that the insurance coverage offers at the very least, adequate protection. Hopefully we can do a little bit better than that though.

Let’s take a look at 3 different options for health insurance:

School Sponsored Health Insurance Plan

Just about every college and university in United States offers health care plans to their students. These plans include visits to the campus health center,  but are otherwise are very limited. The problem with that is that the college health center is very limited in terms of what services they can provide. Any tests or medical procedures that can’t be performed by them can become very expensive for the student as they are referred to the proper facility. We really can’t recommend this coverage. With that said however, it is certainly better than nothing.

Health Coverage on the Parents Plan

Depending on what type of insurance plan the parents have, it is possible to keep the students on their policy. It is unfortunate but because health insurance has become so expensive many insurance companies are becoming rather restrictive in this, and many other regards. An HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) for instance has restrictions on what doctors they will pay for and which medical facilities you can visit.

Utilizing PPO Coverage

If the parents are covered by an HMO program perhaps it is possible for them to switch to a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) program which will give quite a bit more flexibility as far as choosing health care providers goes. In-network doctors and medical care facilities are often the cheapest way to go but you can go out of network with a PPO by making a co-payment.

It can be a rather tedious process trying to lineup health insurance for students, but it really is necessary. It only takes an instance for something to happen and then you can suddenly find yourself requiring very expensive medical care. Without health insurance that care can end up costing a devastating amount of money that will take many, many years to pay for. And that’s a lousy way for a college student, or anyone else for that matter, to begin their adult life.
