I’m not really the biggest exercise enthusiast on the planet. I most definitely do see the advantage is of aerobic activity, however. I was joining my fair share of health clubs and exercise classes and have a whole cabinet full of workout videos. I even joined some aerobics and weight training classes down at the local community college. What my problem is, and I know I’m not alone here, I never stick with an exercise program long enough to see results.

I think one of the problems I face is overload. It seems as if everywhere you turn there is someone coming up with bigger and better and brighter ways of getting aerobic exercise. Sometimes it just seems like too much. I suppose it’s a classic case of just shutting down when you’re confronted with too many choices.

On the other hand, maybe I’m just lazy. Well, either way I know I need to make aerobic activity a regular part of my life. For me it is especially important that I find an exercise program and stick with it. I, like millions of Americans, have a history of heart disease that runs through my family. That alone should motivate me to workout more.

I spoke with a fitness instructor that I know and she told me that I don’t necessarily have to do the latest fad, or take the hottest new class to become physically fit. She explained that the most important thing was to elevate my heart rate while giving my lungs and muscles a good workout that is strenuous but not dangerously so.

Aerobic activity can also be enjoyable. It seems as if many times that this exercise can become sheer drudgery that we can’t bring ourselves to do after time. That need not be the case. Taking a brisk walk outdoors is an excellent form of exercise and there is nothing overly stressful about doing that. Other great exercises include swimming and riding a bike.

If at all possible I enjoy being outdoors. I think it’s a lot better than being locked in some room staring at the four corners wondering just what the heck you’re doing there to begin with. Now that is mundane. Keeping from being bored is no doubt the key to sticking with an effective aerobics exercise program.

You will notice that after you’ve been exercising for a while your breathing will not be quite a strained as it was when you began. That means it’s working! When you feel that the exercises and workouts that you are doing are becoming increasingly easier, you should then increase the pace and push yourself a little bit harder so they can move on to the next level of fitness. These are how the true gains are made.

Aerobic activity can also be done just about anywhere. Even if you travel a great deal you can always sneak in some exercise by walking the stairs, or if need be, simply by walking in place in your hotel room. There is really no excuse not to get in a good aerobic exercise session. Just relax and take it one day at a time. Before you know it you’ll be making great strides and will be feeling healthier than ever.
